Chesters Estate is home to the first Country House Hideout in Scotland, housing four hideout tents, accessible through a walled garden.
On arrival at Chesters were introduced to our new way of living almost immediately as Ellie showed us to our mode of transportation for the week; two trusty wheelbarrows! They were to be our new friends, transporting our luggage, food and firewood for the week.
Wheelbarrows topped up with our belongings we took a trip through the bluebell lined woodland paths, meandering over a stream, past The Bothy (home to all our essential supplies and a few luxuries to be purchased through the week) before we headed across a walled garden and to our hideout named ‘The Badger’.
Badger is our safari tent, turned eco luxury lodge; home to enough beds for 6, a wood burning stove, running water and even a real flushable toilet. The dining table, light fittings and other furnishings are made of reclaimed wood or up cycled materials making for a true eco getaway!
Next door is our very own discovery tent, with two camp beds and enough activities to keep the kids and adults occupied for the week. You’ll definitely find the binoculars useful for tracking down the woodpecker who likes act as your alarm! Preserver with trying to find him as it’s an amazing sight once you do!
Although our hideout is full of luxuries you’d not normally take on a week away in the woods, it doesn’t mean that it’s a home away from home. You’ll soon get to grips with planning in advance for hot water to wash the dishes or to heat the tent up before dinner time. Living by the power of firewood takes time and you need skills to get the fire started (Chris’ are way better than mine!)
Our biggest achievement during our time at our eco getaway was heating up the hot tub. Again, powered by wood it took a few boxes of fuel and perseverance to get going. Don’t make the mistake we did of firing it up at 7pm, only to find that we should’ve been stirring the water and in fact it was cold at the bottom! Start early and stir well. It’s amazing once you crack it!
If you were wondering about washing facilities, then wonder no more. Each tent comes with its own shower. It’s outside and you need to walk a couple of minutes to collect your warm water which has been heated from biomass, bring it back to your shower and plug it in. A few cranks of the tap later and a hot shower is had! It’s the most al fresco shower we have ever had!
Chesters Estate has really created a little piece of eco luxury for all to enjoy. Whether you’re hanging out at the tent or taking a stroll along the riverside, you’ll feel relaxed, rejuvenated and have some new skills to take back to ‘real life’.
