As someone who loves Japanese cuisine but worries about the amount of chemicals and preservatives found in everyday food, I’ve found a range which is perfect! Organic ranges of Japanese food haven’t traditionally been as freely available to buy in supermarkets, but Clearspring is a brand which sells everything from snacks on the go to the basics of a full Japanese meal – at Sainsbury’s and Waitrose and online at www.clearspring.co.uk.
Clearspring food is all organic, free from refined organic ingredients so as not to deplete them of their intrinsic value, and are made using ecologically sound manufacturing practices. I can take a miso soup to work for lunch or prepare an evening meal of seasoned noodles and seawater vegetables and simply enjoy the delicious flavours and health benefits.
Clearspring also have a range of teas – again, organic and authentic Japanese. I often have a green tea during the afternoon when I’m hitting that afternoon slump. With the Organic Japanese Matcha Green Tea Powder traditionally drunk by Buddhist monks to keep them focussed and alert during meditation, I can’t think of anything better. The tea is finely ground, giving a smooth flavoured drink.
The powder format also allows it to be used in cooking, meaning the health benefits can be extended beyond a hot, afternoon drink. The Clearspring website suggests a Matcha roll cake or sorbet, but my suggestion would be for a twist on a margarita cocktail.
35ml/1¼fl oz Tequila
20ml/¾fl oz Cointreau
35ml/1¼fl oz fresh lime juice
¼ teaspoon/1g Matcha powder
handful ice cubes
Pinch of salt
Pinch of Toasted Fine Cut Nori
Prepare the glass rim with salt and Toasted Fine Cut Nori. Nori is the green outer wrap that you see on sushi and has a lovely, sea salt taste – perfect for the contrasting taste of the margarita cocktail.
Pour the Tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and Matcha powder into a cocktail shaker.
Add a handful of ice cubes and shake for 10-15 seconds
Pour into the glass you prepared earlier with the salt and nori rim and add the lime wedge to garnish.
A margarita cocktail with a difference! The end result is a vivid green colour, appealing to those looking for health benefits as well as a refreshing drink.
