Particularly Scandinavian in its appearance, our log cabin for the weekend is tucked away in to the side of a hill, surrounded by natural vegetation and plenty of wildlife. As we approach our sustainable home for the next three days an array of rabbits welcome us, but they don’t stick around too long once we’ve made our way along their path and up to our glass fronted cabin.
Inside the cabin it’s minimalistic eco chic; the open plan interior and tall ceilings add to the feeling of space as the kitchen, dining room and living space roll in to one, with three double bedrooms (all en suite) off to the rear of the cabin. A hamper of local cheeses, wine, chutneys and bread also await us in a beautifully prepared basket. We’re ready to put our feet up in front of the log burning fire and tuck in to some Yorkshire delights!
Looking at eco credentials, Natural Retreats has it all (and the Zero Carbon status to prove it!) The cabin is made from sustainable timber, recycled insulation as well as biomass heating keep us warm while the complex itself has its very own spring giving us natural spring water to drink and shower with.
There is not a shortage of activities and there are some beautiful walks to indulge in right from your front door. We walked along a meandering stream to historic Richmond – it’s a bit of a climb back up the hill, but after a lovely local lunch you’ll have the energy to tackle it (or you can always hop in a taxi!)
This is truly an eco gem, located in a beautiful area of the UK designed to have minimal impact on the natural environment. We’re highly impressed with the long list of eco credentials, as well as the luxury it has successfully maintained.
Don’t worry if you think the Yorkshire Dales are a little out of your way, Natural Retreats have sites stretching the length of the UK, so we’re confident you’ll find somewhere suitable for your eco getaway.
Natural Retreats (www.naturalretreats.com; 0844 384 3166) offers 7 nights in a three bedroom residence (sleeps six) in Yorkshire Dales from £560.
